The Kansai region (Kansai meaning "Western Checkpoint") includes the Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and Shiga prefectures. The Kansai and Kanto regions are often compared with each other especially Osaka and Tokyo the two regional capitals. The Kansai region displays many idiosyncrasies through the culture in Kyoto the mercantilism of Osaka the history of Nara and the distinct Kansai accent heard through the seven prefectures. The Kansai region is the mainstay of the counterculture to the Kanto region and can be said to define the character of Western Japan.
There are three main airports in Kansai;
- Kansai Int'l Airport which handles domestic and all of the international flights,
- Osaka Int'l Airport in Itami handles most domestic flights,
- Kobe Airport is the newest airport, opened Feb16 2006 handles domestic flights.
