The Tohoku region meaning northwest in Japanese occupies
the northeastern portion of Honshu the largests of islands in
Japan. The northwest region is also know as "Michinoku".
Tohoku provided 20 percent of the nation's rice crop and like
most of Japan it is hilly and mountainous but with a harsher
climate. Tourism has become a major industry in the Tohoku
region with points of interest such as Hirosaki, Lake Towada,
Oirase River Valley and Kakunodate.
